A FORMER Ukip parliamentary candidate has been named as the party’s choice to fight next year’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections.
Roy Swales is the first candidate to officially announce that he will stand at the elections for the position, which was first created in 2012.
Independent Simon Hayes became Hampshire’s first PCC when he was elected three years ago to the role that sees him set the police force budget and appoint and hold to account the chief constable.
He has not yet announced whether he will stand for re-election, but if he does he will face former soldier and Surrey police officer Mr Swales.
Having retired from Surrey Constabulary after being injured on duty, Mr Swales has also worked for Hampshire Constabulary and came second in this year’s New Forest East parliamentary election. After announcing his candidacy, he said: “As the voice of Hampshire residents I want to ensure that everyone is able to contribute to the way the police are managed, and as such I will work closely with all parties to ensure this happens.
“When I am elected I want to play my part in its ongoing development and success, to keep officers protected from violence and to make Hampshire safe for my family and for yours.” Next year's elections will take place on May 5.
