MORE than 600 homes in Stockbridge were left without water for hours yesterday after a water main burst in the High Street.

The underground main in the Test Valley village ruptured on Wednesday morning sending torrents of water rushing through the historic village centre.

Hotels and restaurants were some of the hardest hit, with guests unable to use hand basins or showers, while the villages' residents were left buying bottled water to make cups of tea and coffee.

Stockbridge Primary School was also affected, and had to ration out water to its pupils as it was left relying on water stored in the school's water tanks.

A spokesman for Southern Water apologised for the inconvenience, and said ground movements caused by recent hot weather could have led to the pipes breaking.
