A SOUTHAMPTON street will be closed for another month after a collapsed sewer caused it to subside.

Wilton Avenue was first closed in August after a culvert and storm drain collapsed.

It will remain shut until mid-December as a major repair project takes place on the city centre street.

While repairing broken pipes at the scene Southern Water also discovered a Victorian culvert that carried the Rollesbrook River under the road and was in very poor condition.

The culvert will now be replaced with a new concrete pipe and the city council says the complex nature of the work means the project has had to be extended.

The council says 300 tonnes of earth will have been removed from under Wilton Avenue once the work is completed. While the work continues the road will continue to be closed at its junctions with Milton Road and Burlington Road.
