MOTORISTS using one of the main commuter routes into Southampton face months of delays after the announcement of major gas works.
The works will last up to seven months and will see almost one mile of the A27 ripped up so that new gas pipes can be installed under the road surface.
Southern Gas Networks, which is carrying out the work, says it will be forced to set up temporary traffic lights while the work is under way.
The replacement work is due to start on Monday May 21 and will not finish until the end of November.
After Christmas similar works will resume further down the road and will continue for several more months.
The first stage will see medium and low pressure pipes replaced from the A27 at the River Hamble through to the Windhover Roundabout, covering Bridge Road, Oakhill and Providence Hill.
Southern Gas Networks says it will try to keep In January 2008 the replacement work will move to the Fareham side of the River Hamble in Bridge Road.
