MOTORISTS are facing long delays on a busy Hampshire motorway as it was closed following a "serious accident" that left one car lying on its roof.

All three lanes of the M3 northbound were closed after the collision between the blue Peugeot, which was flipped onto its roof in lane three, and a silver Volkswagen before junction nine at Winnall.

All three lanes have now reopened.

A rapid response team and two ambulance crews were called to the scene and two people were taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.

One, a woman, suffered possible neck and arm injuries and the other motorist, a man, suffered potential head injuries.
A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service said their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Motorists are being warned that there are long delays on the M3 northbound as a result of the crash and it is also having a knock-on effect on traffic on the nearby A34.

Highways England described it as a "serious incident" and that "road users are advised to expect delays and allow extra time for their journeys".

Police had diverting traffic away from the motorway along local routes.
