FORMER Saints manager Graeme Souness has been taken into hospital for treatment.

The former Scotland midfielder is at a hospital in Bournemouth but it is not currently clear what he is receiving treatment for.

The 62-year-old managed Saints for a season but resigned in 1997, having guided the club to 16th place and Premier League survival.

He stood down after talking about differences with former club chairman Ruper Lowe and his time at Saints is perhaps best known for his signing of Senegalese player Ali Dia.

The player apparently came with the recommendation of legendary former Liberia striker George Weah but it emerged that it was a hoax and he performed so badly in his one game, as a substitute for Matt Le Tissier, that he was subbed off after just 20 minutes.

Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling said he hoped Souness would "get well very quickly" at the start of today's programme.

Souness also played for Middlesbrough and, most famously, Liverpool in a distinguished playing career before going on to manage the Anfield club, Rangers and Newcastle.
