A 38-year-old woman has been identified as the person who plunged to her death from IKEA's multi-storey carpark.

Now IKEA in West Quay Road, Southampton have said they will be reviewing the safety of their car park following the death of the woman.

Ambulances and an air ambulance rushed to the store on Monday afternoon after a woman fell from the car park on the IKEA roof.

According to the Coroner’s office the 38-year-old woman is from the Fair Oak area, although her name has yet to be released.

Her body was discovered on the ground floor and police guarded the entrance to the carpark for several hours not allowing cars to enter as emergency services dealt with the fatality.

Part of the ground floor was cordoned off as was part of the roof around a white Mercedes car that police were searching.

The woman's next of kin have been informed.

Now, the popular furniture store has said it will be looking into the safety of their carpark which towers above West Quay Road.

An IKEA spokesperson said: "Following the tragic incident that happened yesterday, we are continuing to support the police with their investigations.

"As we await the outcomes of the investigation, we will of course be reviewing the safety and security of our carpark to see if anything can be done to prevent this unexpected event from happening again.

According to customers, no announcements were made in the shop about the incident but shoppers reported that the usually busy IKEA was quiet as police stopped cars from entering the carpark.

The Hampshire Coroner has since ordered a post-mortem examination and police are not treating the incident as suspicious.
