IT'S a tradition as old as the village itself.

Hundreds of enthusiasts converged on Wickham today to take part in one of the country's oldest horse fairs.

They came from all corners of the country to talk about all things equine, make a sale or two and catch up with old friends.

Villagers lined the streets to soak up the unique atmosphere and watch the age-old traditional parade of decorated shire horses, Shetland ponies and bareback riding through the village square.

Wickham Horse Fair is one of just two major horse trading events in the country. It can trace its history back to the 13th century when it was awarded a Royal Charter.

Because of the sheer number of people expected at The Square police had warned motorists to steer clear of the area if they were not visiting the fair.

The Square was closed for most of the day until 6pm. The A334 Fareham Road from the A32 School Road junction to the Budden Road junction was also closed during the equestrian extravaganza.

Diversions were in place and police officers were manning these points.
