A 91-year-old woman who survived a gas explosion which destroyed her Hampshire home still has no recollection of the blast.

Queenie Dear was found buried beneath the rubble and wreckage of her bungalow in Elstree Road, Woolston, on Sunday morning.

Last night Barbara Stone said her mother, who is recovering in Salisbury District Hospital, still had a mental block of her remarkable escape.

"She's very distressed. She doesn't know what happened to the house. It's blanked out of her mind.

"She thinks she burned her hands and fell over," she said.

Rescue workers found Queenie in a cavity which formed when her kitchen blew up and the roof and walls collapsed around her.

The grandmother was making breakfast on a gas stove when the explosion happened and she was found lying surrounded by bricks, wood, kitchen appliances, glass and twisted metal.

Mrs Stone said her mother had burns to her hands but was otherwise largely unscathed.

She said it was too early to tell whether there would be any long-term damage but said her mother did suffer from mild Alzheimer's.

"She probably won't go home. The shock would be too great," Mrs Stone said.

"She's very confused and very upset."

Queenie was not due to be released from hospital for at least a week, she added.

The explosion happened shortly before 6.30am and neighbours said they thought an earthquake had struck their street.

The blast blew out all the windows of Queenie's home but no other properties were damaged.

Some neighbours tried to get to Queenie but couldn't reach her.

Residents were evacuated but were quickly allowed back to their homes when firefighters were confident there would be no more explosions.

They described Queenie's survival as "stunning".
