THE memory of a popular Hampshire grandmother inspired more than 100 people to stride out on a fundraising walk through the New Forest.
It was the hope of Denise Dee' Mason, of Totton, who died of cancer last year, that the sponsored walk she set up to raise money for fellow cancer patients should continue after her death.
About 150 people granted her wish as they followed the three-mile route in what organisers hope will become a new annual charity event. They are expected to raise thousands of pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
A new addition this year included a Mini Mac Day' fete outside The Lamb Inn in Nomansland, where one of Dee's son's, Lee, works. Attractions included traditional children's races, a cake stall, plant stands, a tombola and a charity auction.
Organiser Teresa Moriarty said the event had been a great success.
She added: "I am over the moon. Lots of the villagers got involved and it was great to see. I am very pleased and happy about how it all went.
"Dee was a very special person to me and to a lot of people and everyone wants to keep raising money in her memory."
Friends and family of Dee, who died after a seven-year battle against cancer of the lymphatic system, now hope to hold a similar fundraising event again next year.
