THOUSANDS of Hampshire families risk being plunged into debt because of a blunder by HM Customs and Revenue over tax credits.
The Daily Echo can reveal more than 52,000 families across the county were overpaid on their tax credits.
The error means nearly half the families receiving tax credits in Hampshire have had wrong payments.
HM Customs and Revenue bosses are now trying to recoup some of the £40.6m worth of overpayments they made in Hampshire during the 12-months period.
And that could mean the 52,000 families affected are asked to pay back hundreds perhaps thousands of pounds.
Last night the news was branded disgraceful amid promises to get it right next time!
