A Southampton pub has had a facelift with a difference.

Pub group Brewhouse and Kitchen has not only renovated The Goat on Highfield Lane, but has also installed a microbrewery, offering beers and ales brewed on site to its customers.

ALthough the pub has been open a shortwhile, it has only now held it's official launch.

The company’s head brewer Peter Hughes said: “It’s only a small brewery and it isn’t the whole focus, but it’s definitely a unique selling point.

“We’ve got nine pubs around the country and in every single one we have a brewery on site.

“Although there is a certain level of investment there is definitely a return on it.

“We will be producing beer with virtually zero carbon miles and as fresh as you can get it. Customers will also be able to speak to a brewer who would normally be hidden away in an industrial estate.

“Beer is notoriously bad at travelling and once it leaves a brewery some skill is required from the landlord to serve it properly.

“But with us the brewer is in control from the brewery to the tap handle.”

Each Brewhouse and Kitchen pub has its own resident brewer and for Southampton it will be Spanish born and German trained, Daniel Del Olmo.

Peter said: “He is a very well educated brewer who has trained at VLB in Germany, one of the world’s most prestigious brewing schools.”

The pub will also serve food, sticking to the alcohol theme with a signature been can chicken dish to share between three.

There will be lager on sale from other breweries too, but each Brewhouse brewer has the freedom to create their own lines of real ale. For Southampton they are named after local institutions; a 3.6% ‘Speedwell’ named after The Mayflower’s sister ship, or a pint of Saints inspired ‘On Le Tiss.’

“We’re not J.D. Wetherspoon’s but we do make sure we’re competitive,” said Mr Hughes.

“We’re British and we want to make British beer,” he added, “but we’re genuine free houses and we regularly update our lines. We like to move with the times.”
