THE front man of one of the world's most successful bands is forging ahead in the Daily Echo's quest to name Hampshire's Top 100.

Rock legend Mark Knopfler, pictured, is narrowly leading in the popularity stakes after we asked you to nominate who has made the county famous across the globe.

Who would you like to see in the top 100? We need YOU, our readers, to send in YOUR suggestions to ensure the supplement also contains the results of a unique readers' poll. Your favourites do not need to have been born in Hampshire. However, they must have had a solid association at some point during their lives and made a notable contribution to either the county or the country.

The Daily Echo will publish a fascinating supplement on June 20 to pay tribute to Hampshire's true greats.

The Dire Straits vocalist and guitarist, famous for hits including Money For Nothing and Walk of Life, has a luxurious home in the New Forest.

One fan told the Daily Echo: "He is a unique guitar player, and an exceptional songwriter, respected around the world. Plus he is a very generous person to fans and charity, and doesn't make a big deal of it."

Another added that he "has distinguished himself as the best guitarist/song riter alive today" and another described him as "one of the greatest guitarists and songwriters in any genre of music".

Other firm favourites already attracting support include Saints legend Matthew "Le God" Le Tissier, trumpeted by one reader as "a fantastic servant to Southampton FC, there has been no one since who has come from Hampshire football who is close to his magic and loyalty".

Olympian Iwan Thomas is racking up the votes with supporters telling us their reasons, including that he is a "legend who always gave it 100 per cent".

Ken Russell, who lives in Lymington, has been described as "surely the best British film director we have ever had" and Southampton singing sensation Craig David has been nominated for his "unique style".

Other Hampshire stars already gaining support include Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason and Lord Nelson.
