A WOMAN who has spent the last year campaigning for better disabled loos has been nominated for an award.

Sarah Brisdion’s son, Hadley, suffers from cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair, but she was shocked when she discovered there were very few adequate toilet and changing facilities for disabled people who cannot independently use them.

Now the 36-year-old campaigns to get better facilities installed throughout Hampshire and has been nominated for a St George’s Day award.

The Daily Echo has helped launch Southampton’s City Council’s St George’s Day awards, which celebrate the people who make this city what it is.

The nominations have now closed and more than 20 people and groupswho go out of their way to improve people’s lives in the Southampton city region have been nominated.

The awards will be presented at a special St George’s Day festival to commemorate the national day on April 23.

Hadley is unable to use the toilet on his own, but Sarah says there just are not enough disabled toilets equipped to change disabled people.

She said: “It was a bit of an eye opener, it is horrific when the only way to change him is to lay on the floor covered in urine to change him.”

Now Sarah, who was born in Totton, campaigns so that no one has to go through this experience.

The full-time carer and copywriter said: “It has been busy and stressful but for a very good cause, people are now contacting me because they want to know more about this.

“We need these facilities in big football stadiums and sports arenas like the Ageas Bowl.

"We want to see the large places install these, especially where you pay a lot of money to go.”

Since beginning her campaign, Sarah has seen the special loos installed in the New Forest as well Longdown Activity farm in Ashurst.

She said: “I can’t believe I have been nominated - it is very flattering.”
