POLICE are hunting a cyclist who tried to stage a smash-and grab raid at a Hampshire jeweller’s in broad daylight.

The raider cycled up to Barry Papworth Jewellers in St Thomas Street, Lymington, and used a mallet to strike a glass panel in an attempt to steal items on display.

After failing to break the glass he sped off on his mountain bike towards Stanford Hill.

The would-be raider was white, aged 25-35, and was wearing a dark-coloured hooded top and light-coloured gloves. He was riding a black full suspension mountain bike.

The incident happened on Tuesday at 12.55pm.

PC David Barnes, of Hampshire Police, said: “I’d like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information about who may be responsible.”
