ONE of Team GB’s golden girls was in Hampshire to show off her Olympic medal.
Alex Danson a member of Britain’s gold winning women’s hockey team in Rio called in at the Hendy Kia dealership in Eastleigh to show staff and customers her medal.
The 31-year-old, who was born in Southampton and did much of her playing in her younger days at Trojans, has had a sponsorship deal with Hendy Kia for more than two years and drives a Kia Soul.
“Hendy’s support is absolutely invaluable,” she said. “I can’t thank them enough.
"The car is such a fantastic benefit and has enabled me to focus on my training and preparation and give it my total commitment.
“The fact is without commercial sponsorship – I’m also supported by Investec and UK Sport – the job of professional athletes looking to perform at the highest level would be virtually impossible.”
Recalling that memorable evening in Rio on Friday August 20 when Great Britain’s women beat the Netherlands in a dramatic penalty shoot-out, Alex - who also won bronze at London 2012 - said: “We had no idea the impact the game had on people back home.
“More than 9m nine million people watched it on television. It was absolutely the best day of my life. An incredible feeling.”
Hendy Group commercial director Mark Busby said: “Alex is an absolute delight.
“She is incredibly professional and friendly – a terrific ambassador for the sport and a great role model for youngsters.
“The team here and our customers were just knocked out. They were all queuing up for selfies and to hold the medal. I’ve never seen so many smiling faces.
“We’re very proud of her.”
