A MULTI-MILLION pound scheme in Southampton could be one step closer after a feasibility study was commissioned.
The plans could include a new network across Southampton stretching from Southampton to Eastleigh with plans to extend further into towns including Fareham and Romsey.
Gary Jefferies from the Solent Enterprise Partnership said: "We are looking to establish a rail light in Southampton to reduce traffic congestion in the region.
"The initial plans will cost £1 million to commission the study which is required in order to get potential government funding from Central Government."
The study will look at the optimum routes for the Light Rail project with hopes to cover major Hampshire towns however will focus specific on a Phase One which will involve running trams from Southampton to Eastleigh.
