ENTHUSIASTIC staff at a Southampton supermarket will be putting their best foot forward in a bid to help the city raise £1m for Race for Life.
Sixty staff from the Tesco store in Tebourba Way will be taking part in the sell-out event on July 17,when 10,000 women will complete the five-kilometre course on Southampton Common.
Team spokeswoman Sonya Piekaar said: "There are 20 night staff and 40 women who work during the day and weekends who will be taking part.
"The number grows each year - everyone taking part has been affected in some way by cancer.
Either they have had it themselves or someone close to them has had it and they want to give something back," said Sonya.
Last year the Tesco team raised £4,000 and this year they hope to better that total.
Calculations show that if every gran, mum, daughter or sister taking part was able to raise £50 then the city's race alone would bring £500,000.
However, by doubling their efforts and raising £100 a head that total would reach the magical million mark. The Daily Echo has launched a campaign to urge every runner to go the extra mile and raise a million pounds.
Race co-ordinator Karina Morgan said: "The support that the people of Southampton have shown Cancer Research UK's Race for Life over the years is amazing.
"We want to raise £500,000 from the race but the Daily Echo's bid to double that figure would be simply amazing.
Money raised on the day helps to make advances in preventing, treating and curing cancer.
