HAMPSHIRE and Isle of Wight residents were today being urged to be vigilant as Britain moved on to the highest level of terror alert.

Security was being stepped up at the nation's airports across the county, including Southampton, as fears grow that the terrorists could strike at any time.

Police are now holding four people following an attack on Glasgow Airport that is being linked to the discovery of two car bombs in London's West End.

Last night the UK moved to its highest level of terror alert -critical- after a burning car crashed into the entrance to Glasgow Airport where thousand of passengers had been checking in ready to jet off on summer holidays.

Hampshire Police today immediately issued a statement to calm any fears.

A spokesman said: "Officers and staff at Hampshire Constabulary are aware of the incidents that occurred at Glasgow.

"We have put in place additional security measures and we would like to reassure residents that there is no specific threat to Hampshire and the Isle of Wight at this time.

"But as always we would urge members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police."

Anyone who sees anything suspicious should ring 0845 045 4545.

Flights were arriving and departing Southampton Airport as normal.
