DRIVERS in the New Forest will face an increase in parking charges next year.

New Forest District Council cabinet members have agreed to up the cost of a short-stay car parking permit for the Forest's towns and villages by two pounds. At a cabinet meeting yesterday, members were faced with the choice of adding one or two pounds to the eight-pound short-stay parking clock.

They opted for the higher figure, taking the total to ten pounds from January 1, 2008. Councillor Chris Treleaven, planning and transportation portfolio holder, said the clock remains good value at 20p a week instead of the current 16p a week.

The cost of the long-stay parking clocks will stay the same, at 44 pounds for six months or 80 pounds for a year.

In the current financial year, the council expects to sell 47,260 short-stay clocks for 378, 080 pounds.
