FIREFIGHTERS from the Isle of Wight were today heading to South Yorkshire to join the massive flood relief effort.
Four firefighters from Newport Fire Station were travelling to Toll Bar, South Yorkshire, to man high volume pumps which are being manned around-the- clock to reduce the water levels in the village.
They will be relieved on Monday by three of their colleagues from Newport who will continue with the pumping operation.
Councillor Ian Ward, Island Council cabinet member with responsibility to for the fire service, said: "It is only right that we on the Island offer our support to colleagues on the mainland to help them respond to the devastation caused by the recent floods.
"There is a strong sense of camaraderie throughout the UK's fire services and this is an example of that. Our firefighters are looking forward to doing their bit to help the Toll Bar community."
