THEY dusted off their platforms and back-combed their afros.

A Hampshire couple, together with friends and family, stepped back in time to renew their wedding vows - 25 years after making them for the first time.

Tony and Sarah Andrews celebrated in style - well, Seventies style - as they made their promises again at St Mary's Church, Bishopstoke.

It was like a scene from Saturday Night Fever as more than 100 family and friends donned tank tops, flares and afro wigs at the request of the couple, who chose a 1970s theme for the occasion.

In a blaze of hairspray and out-dated dress, Sarah, 43, took her place at the altar as a punk bride, wearing a tartan lace dress and huge red wig, next to Tony, 47, who wore a crocodile skin suit and an afro to beat all afros.

And the traditional hymns were ditched and replaced by a host of funky tunes - including UB40 as the couple entered the church and Monty Python's Always Look On the Bright Side of Life as they made their exit.

Sarah, of Harvey Road, who has four children with Tony, said: "The day was superb. It went like a dream. It was a bit of a risk asking people to turn up in fancy dress because you never know how many will join in, but they all did us proud.

"It has been a long- running joke in the family that we would renew our vows in fancy dress, but if it hadn't have been for my son organising it with the vicar then we probably would never have done it.

"We thought a 70s theme would really make the day special and memorable.

"We met in the late 70s so we thought it would be apt to celebrate those times. It was such a nice day and, although we had a traditional blessing, we played music from the era instead of hymns."

The Rev Richard Wise, who conducted the blessing, was quite surprised when the family made the request.

He said: "I've never held a service where everyone was in fancy dress, but it was good to get people to enjoy being in church while appreciating the serious commitment Tony and Sarah have made to one another."
