A MAJOR route into Southampton has reopened following an accident in the early hours which left a motorcyclist dead.
The crash which also involved a van, happened on Stoneham Way which was closed while the scene was cleared.
Police were called around 4.20am following a 999 call. The motorcyclist was taken to Southampton General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. It is understood the driver of the van was uninjured.
Police also shut the slip road at junction 5 westbound, for Eastleigh, so vehicles were prevented from coming off the motorway.
Officers managed to reopen the roads at about 8am.
