A SOUTHAMPTON sports centre was transformed into a gruelling obstacle course.

Hundreds of people took on the Active Warrior obstacle course today.

Around 1,100 people signed up for the course which included a 5km route and a 10km route around Southampton Sports Centre.

The event, which is organised by Active Nation, is in its second year after a successful pilot in October 2016.

Bosses at Active Nation hailed this year's event as a huge success thanks to new obstacles and improvements.

The highlight of the course for many people is the 80 metre waterslide, which is usually used as a ski-slope.

Other obstacles include a mud-zone, monkey bars, ditches, sandbags and water.

Race director Dave Drew said: "It has been brilliant we had our first event in October, this is our second event and the feedback from people has been brilliant and they say it is ten times better.

"We have doubled our numbers on last time, and it is a nice day and it has been great.

"We have a higher percentage of people doing the event for the first time, which is 20 per cent and for us at Active Nation that is brilliant."

He said Active Nation plan to hold Active Warrior again next year, and said there will be a Christmas Warrior Santa Dash on December 10 at Southampton Sports Centre.
