Virgil van Dijk is understood to have handed in a transfer request at Saints.
The Dutch defender is believed to have taken the step to try and push through a summer move away from St Mary’s.
Van Dijk has been adamant that he wants to leave the club ever since his return to pre-season, leading to manager Mauricio Pellegrino ordering the 26-year-old to train alone while continuing to insist he is not for sale.

Saints were unavailable for comment, though the Daily Echo understands they knew the move was a possibility and doesn’t change their position.
Van Dijk has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool for several months.
