Police say if it wasn't for a member of the public was walking past at the time the attack could have been far worse.
Officers have urged people walking on the common, which is popular with dog walkers, runners and young families, to carry mobile phones and be extremely vigilant.
A 17-year-old male arrested yesterday was this morning still being quizzed by police.
