EMERGENCY repairs to a failing manhole cover are causing major traffic delays this afternoon.
Two lanes of the westbound A33, Redbridge Road, are currently closed while a highways team deals with the emergency work.
Traffic is currently queuing as far back as Waterhouse Lane on the westbound carriageway.
Repair crews arrived on site at 1pm are aiming to complete the work by 4pm, ahead of rush hour.
A spokesperson for Southampton City Council said: “The police have reported a failing manhole cover on the Redbridge Road outbound between lane 1 and 2.
“Our highways team implemented a temporary closure around the manhole to make it safe and to enable an emergency repair.
“A repair crew was on site by 1pm and they are aiming to complete the work by 4pm ahead of this evening’s peak period, provided everything goes well.”
