A HAMPSHIRE teenager has pulled a rabbit out of a hat by winning a major competition for budding magicians.

Ben Farrar, 16, has been crowned The Magic Circle's Young Magician of the Year.

The prestigious contest, which is open to all magicians under the age of 18, is held every two years.

Ben, whose stage name is Ben Hart, said he was surprised to win. "It was a shock. It is a very prestigious title.

"I have always found magic interesting. I like the interaction with people, in a nice way trying to fool them, yet giving them enjoyment."

He has just finished his GCSEs at Kings' School and starts A-levels at Peter Symonds College in September studying biology, chemistry, psychology and drama and theatre studies.

"I would like to be a professional. I like Derren Brown. He has put a new spin on magic."

Ben, of Field Way, Compton, Winchester, started dabbling about eight years ago with a Paul Daniels magic set and has evolved his own distinctive style.

His winning act was a combination of classic magic with some unusual twists.

It did not actually include a rabbit but did involve a floating light which mysteriously rose out of a briefcase. An apparently endless stream of salt poured from his hands and the flex from his light bulb holder took on a life of its own as it danced around his body.

The judges said: "This competition was of an extremely high standard but Ben's combination of skill, charm and entertainment value ensured that he became a worthy winner."

His parents, Mike and Simone Farrar were delighted by his victory: "It's fantastic. We are delighted and very proud of him," said Mike.
