A FAMILY-run business will celebrate a unique achievement when the New Forest and Hampshire County Show starts tomorrow.

Coles Funfair will mark the 60th anniversary of its first appearance at the show, which attracts about 100,000 people every year.

The funfair has been entertaining the crowds at the event since 1947.

A show spokesman said: "John Cole started the funfair at Lyndhurst in 1890. His great grandchildren, Peter and Billy Cole, now run it with Billy's sons, Robert and William.

"About 40 of John's descendants are now involved in the business. Each year they operate their funfair at about 30 venues across Hampshire and Dorset."

Organisers are hoping the show will not be badly hit by the weather, which is threatening to make this summer one of the wettest on record.

Contractors were issued with a "keep off the grass" warning during the construction of all the tents, stands and marquees that make up the 38-acre showground at New Park, Brockenhurst.

Workmen had to carry their equipment across the site to prevent vehicles churning up the turf.

Star attractions at the Daily Echo-backed event will include the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, which will perform its four-gun musical drive.

For children there is the David Beckham Football Academy, which is making a rare excursion outside London. Coaching sessions for 12 youngsters at a time will be staged every half-an-hour.

Other parts of the showground will feature the traditional mix of country crafts, livestock competitions, produce and entertainment.
