PLANS for the next phase of a £500m residential development have been unveiled.
Crest Nicholson, the developers of the Centenary Quay development in Woolston, has unveiled proposals, known as phase five, to build new luxury residential flats and green space.
Planning permission has already been granted for development on the former Vosper Thorneycroft site, which will create 1,000 jobs.
Crest Nicholson says it will create a high quality, residential development of 103 homes consisting of 16 private terraced houses and 87 apartments, of which 59 will be affordable.
Developers argue it will help with the regeneration of urban land, improve security in the area through an increase in surveillance while opening up the riverside environment to the public.
Woolston councillor Warwick Payne said: “We are not getting any community services out of phase five, but it is one of the less dense parts of the scheme and one of the less controversial parts of Centenary Quay.”
However, residents were disappointed by another decision by Crest Nicholson to put in an additional planning application at the same time as the one for phase five to revise phase four.
The application would see an extra eight flats in the approved 27-storey tower, increasing the total number from 157 to 165.
Councillor Payne added: “It is always sensitive if Crest Nicolson tries to increase the number of homes it intends to build. The feedback I have is to hold the line and not take any more homes on what has already been approved.
“We don’t need any more, we have gone past the point where the straw has broken the camel’s back, this is kicking the camel when it’s already down.”
The plans will go before Southampton City Council’s planning committee early next year. It comes as baker Patisserie Valerie announced it will be opening up a new unit in the retail complex at the site which already houses Supermarine, Vospers and Mettricks.
