A TODDLER has died after she was found floating in the garden swimming pool of a Hampshire home.

Medics tried desperately to resuscitate 17-month-old Anma Hider when she was discovered unconscious in the purpose-built ground-level pool at about 8.30pm last night.

An ambulance arrived at the property, thought to be in the Warblington area of Havant, and rushed the girl to Queen Alexandra hospital in Portsmouth.

She was pronounced dead at 9.49pm, despite continued attempts by doctors to resuscitate her.

The Daily Echo understands that the toddler has a 13-year-old brother and seven-year-old sister.

This morning police were continuing their investigations.

Officers from Netley special investigation unit attended the scene last night and were today looking into the circumstances running up to the tragedy.

A police spokesman said Hampshire Constabulary's child protection unit was monitoring the situation. She said: "We have a duty to investigate if a child dies.

"At this stage, investigating officers are still looking in to the circumstances, but at the moment everything we have seen is consistent with a tragic incident."

Portsmouth City Council confirmed that Anna, who was from the city, was in foster care.

Leader of Portsmouth City Council Gerald Vernon-Jackson said the authority would now carry out a review of what had happened.

In a statement he said: "We offer our sincere condolences to the family of the child who tragically died yesterday.

"The child was the subject of an interim care order.

"We are offering every support possible to all those who have been affected by this.

"We are liaising closely with the police who are investigating the full circumstances of this tragic incident.

"We understand that there will be an inquest and the city council will also carry out our own review of the circumstances."

An inquest is expected to be opened later today.
