RESIDENTS are being encouraged to recycle their milk bottle tops to raise money for charity.

Southampton based charity Gift of Sight needs £2m to carry out important research into the causes of and treatment for Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

Milk lovers are being urged to bring their clean bottle tops to the bin situated outside the Eye Unit at Southampton General Hospital in Tremona Road.

Professor Andrew Lotery established the Gift of Sight appeal in 2004 with the aim of funding world class research into the prevention and cure for blindness.

AMD affects one in three elderly people and is the most common form of blindness in the world.

The charity, which was awarded Charity of the Year in 2006 by Optician Magazine, is also doing research into nystagmus and glaucoma.
