A SOUTHAMPTON supermarket is installing new cameras in a bid to stop drivers using its car park for too long.
Sainsbury’s, on Portswood Road, will place a new automatic number plate recognition camera in its car park – much of which is under the store – to deter parkers from exceeding the two-hour stay limit.
Drivers who do overstay will be charged £70.
Along with the camera, a new sign stating the rules will also be installed, which also says that people spending longer than five minutes dropping someone off will also be subject to the charge.
The signs say: “Please observe the following condition to avoid a parking charge notice of £70. Parking conditions apply 24/7.”
WYG Group submitted the plans on behalf of the supermarket to Southampton City Council.
The application stated: “The ANPR camera and signage will enable parking regulations to be enforced on the site more effectively and ensure that the car park is not used for parking by those not using the store.”
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “The new electronic number plate recognition system means customers will be able to find a parking space when they need one, particularly at busy times.”
