The ABP Southampton Marathon is appealing for running clubs across the city to show some love for their fellow runners this April.

Organisers of the event are calling upon running clubs to volunteer on race day to help marshal some of the more complex parts of the route.

Between 800 and 1000 volunteers are set to support this year’s event as ‘ABP Milemakers’.

ABP Milemakers are tasked with cheering on runners at each mile and keeping them motivated with everything from inspiring placards to sweets and water. They also provide marshalling duties and direct runners. Just like the Gamesmakers at London 2012 Olympics, they play a vital role in making the event a success.

Organisers of the event, along with sponsors at the city’s port, are appealing for running clubs in particular to step forward and help marshal tricky parts of the route.

Alastair Welch, ABP Southampton director, said: “We’re appealing to running groups across the city to show some love for those who share their passion for pounding the pavements and volunteer as ABP Milemakers this year.”

Nikki Rees, from the ABP Southampton Marathon, added: “Southampton has a vibrant running community with lots of active running clubs. We’re hoping those who aren’t taking part themselves will still get involved in the event as volunteers.”
