The road was closed for three hours to allow a forensic examination of the scene.

Roy Gentry, chairman of Alresford Town Council, called on the Hampshire Constabulary to look at how it polices traffic in the town.

He said: "I'm not saying the police are at fault, but having had two fatal accidents in a short period of time they might want to review their policies."

Mr Gentry said he was worried about traffic in general in the town, especially the large number of heavy lorries servicing burgeoning watercress farming at Old Alresford.

"I'm really concerned about those lorries; some of them come quickly down that road where the accidents have occurred."
