EMERGENCY services rushed to Southampton Airport last night after a plane carrying 117 people reported smoke in the cockpit and cabin.

Fire crews from Eastleigh and St Mary's, police and paramedics were all called at around 10pm and were in place to deal with any problems the Flybe flight from Murcia experienced on landing.

However the smoke had dispersed by the time the Embraer 195 plane landed successfully at 10.15pm and after checking the craft the response crews were stood down.

It is believed no one required medical assistance as a result of the incident.

It was the second night in a row the airport's emergency action plan had been put into use.

On Monday night a section of the M27 had to be closed after a pilot reported problems with the landing gear on his light aircraft.

That incident also ended without injuries after the Cessna 310 touched down successfully.
