A WINCHESTER man alleged to have murdered his partner and his son today made his first appearance at crown court.

James Conan, 64, is accused of stabbing Kirsty O'Connell, 21, and smothering Patrick O'Connell, four, at their flat in Woolford Close, Stanmore.

The bodies were discovered when police broke into their home on Friday August 3.

Conan, a retired security officer, appeared this morning wearing a blue sweatshirt and dark trousers.

He spoke only to confirm his name.

After a five minute hearing, the judge, recorder of Winchester, Michael Brodrick adjourned the case until a plea and case management hearing on November 12.

He remanded Conan in custody.
