A PROCESSION of some of the fastest powerboats in the world will take to the streets of Southampton this afternoon.

Several teams competing in this weekend's British Grand Prix of the Sea will be parading around the city before they head across The Solent to prepare for the Daily Echo-supported Cowes Powerboat Festival.

The event gives the people of Southampton a rare chance to see the 2,000-horsepower machines up close, which compete in the water-borne equivalent of Formula One.

Organisers will also be handing out free goodie bags and Red Funnel ferry tickets along the route.

The 45-minute procession, including several British competitors in the P1 Powerboat championships, will leave Mayflower Park at 2.30pm.

The circular route will also take in Town Quay, High Street, West Street, Castle Way, Bargate Street, Hanover Buildings, Palmerston Road, New Road, Civic Centre Road and Portland Terrace.
