RACING at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, they are set to blow Cowes' peaceful image as the home of yachting out of the water.
This weekend The Solent will resemble a Formula One racetrack more than a sailing haven, as scores of powerboats roar into action off the island.
The full throttle racing of the Powerboat P1 British Grand Prix of the Sea and the Honda Formula 4-Stroke Powerboat Series will be just some of the highlights of what is set to be three-days of high-octane action.
More than 100 craft will thunder across the waves during the Daily Echobacked Cowes Powerboat Festival, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Competitors, including many Hampshire-based racers in almost every event, will take to the water in everything from jet skis to the super-powerful P1 boats.
All the action will take place within view of perfect on-shore vantage points for the thousands of spectators expected to turn out.
As well as the thrills and spills of high-speed racing, enthusiasts and casual onlookers alike can also enjoy team exhibitions, food and drink stalls, and parties into the night.
