Huge tailbacks that hit a Hampshire motorway earlier today have been cleared in time for the evening rush hour.

The accidents, on both sides of the M27, led to massive queues as emergency services shut lanes while they cleared the incidents from the road.

The first accident happened at around 11.39am when a white Ford Transit van overturned after hitting the central reservation between junctions 11 and 12 westbound.

Police and ambulance crew attended the accident and treated the motorist for minor injuries at the scene but did not take them to hospital.

The second accident happened minutes later on the eastbound side of the M27 at around 11.50am near junction 5.

The female driver of a Blue Renault Clio was taken to Southampton General Hospital after her car went into the central reservation and then overturned.

Police, ambulance crews and Hampshire Fire and Rescue attended both the incidents and closed off two lanes on either side of the carriageway while debris was cleaned off the road.

Road chiefs managed to reopen the lanes within an hour of the accidents and reported that the queues had cleared by mid-afternoon.
