THE thrills and spills of high-octane powerboat racing finally arrive in The Solent today with the start of the Cowes Powerboat Festival.

Thousands of spectators are expected to descend on the Isle of Wight for three days of spectacular events on and off the water, as part of the Daily Echo-backed event.

Among the highlights of the festival is the Powerboat P1 British Grand Prix of the Sea, the equivalent of motor racing's Formula One, which stages its first leg at 2.30pm today, with the endurance Round The Island Challenge.

As well as the 100-mph super-powerful boats there will be supporting races featuring jet skis, Rigid Inflatable Boats, and the latest stages of the Honda Formula 4-Stroke Series.

But the entertainment isn't restricted to the racing, with visitors able to mingle with the competitors, inspect the pits, and see team exhibitions.

For more information visit www.powerboatp1.com, and don't miss the Daily Echo tomorrow and Monday for full coverage of all the racing.
