A parish council has been left with a bill running into thousands of pounds after vandals wrecked one of its community buildings.

All the windows were smashed and hundreds of tiles were torn off the roof at Roy Underdown Pavilion in Hamble.

The pavilion in Baron Road is one of the areas in Hamble where cameras are set to roll as part of a crackdown on the yob behaviour which is threatening to swamp the village.

The yobs' attack on the pavilion, which is at the heart of the village's sporting life, has angered residents. The building is still in use but major repairs will have to be carried out.

The pavilion is named after former parish council chairman and community stalwart Roy Underdown.

His son Ian, who is the current parish council chairman, said: "This is one of the worst vandal attacks we have had on a parish building.

"The whole village is disgusted and cannot believe what has happened. This behaviour is just not acceptable."

Police, who are investigating this latest incident, are continuing to provide dedicated patrols in Hamble on Friday and Saturday nights, which have been ongoing for several weeks.
