SOUTHAMPTON health bosses have sent out a reminder that accident and emergency departments are not always the answer to people's health problems.

With Bank Holiday in full swing, Southampton City Primary Care Trust wants people with minor injuries, aches and pains and illnesses to make use of its three walk-in centres.

The Fanshawe Wing of the Royal South Hants hospital, Commercial Street Bitterne and Howards Grove Shirley will be open from 8am to 9.30pm on Saturday August 25, 26 and 27.

NHS walk-in centres offer nurse-led services 365 days a year and are able to treat illnesses and injuries such as infections and rashes, coughs, headaches and stomach upsets, cuts and bruises, strains and sprains.

Nurses can also give advice on colds and flu like symptoms, on blood pressure testing and health promotion and can provide emergency contraception.

Ellen McNicholas, Service Manager for Unscheduled Care at Southampton City PCT said: "It is important that patients understand how important it is to use NHS resources responsibly. Being injured or unwell doesn't necessarily mean going to A&E, whose staff are there to deal with more serious or life-threatening injuries and illnesses."
