A MAJOR £5m hospital expansion plan to provide a better environment for patients going through cancer treatment is revealed today.
Health bosses have received a the cash injection to revamp Southampton General Hospital's pioneering blood disorder unit.
Plans include a centre with additional side rooms, a state-of-the-art day treatment area and new bathroom facilities.
The news comes just 24 hours after the Daily Echo revealed proposals by Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust to slash £21m from its budget by introducing cost-cutting initiatives.
But health chiefs say the new expansion will be an improvement for in-patients with leukaemia, myeloma and other blood disorders.
The haematology unit is at the forefront of care for patients who undergo chemotherapy, radiotherapy and bone marrow transplants to treat cancers of the blood.
