IT has coped well with one of its worst crises in its 99-year history.

The foot and mouth outbreak in Surrey and the nationwide ban on all susceptible animals had posed a major threat to staging this year's popular Alresford Show.

Livestock has always been the absolute core of the show, organised by the Alresford and District Agricultural Society.

But organisers were determined that the show should go ahead if at all possible and provided that it was safe to do so.

The show's chief livestock steward, local vet Sarah Matthews, has been in daily contact with DEFRA, monitoring the developing situation in Surrey and advising the society on possible options.

Abandon At a special meeting it was decided to abandon the farm livestock classes, but to run the rest of the show as normal with some exciting new alternative events.

The show will be going ahead on Saturday at Tichborne Park from 9am to 6pm.
