THIS is the moment when nearly 40 Hampshire children played a unique game of rugby in the middle of the Solent.

Two teams of youngsters were taken out to the Bramble Bank yesterday.

They boarded boats at 5.30am to take advantage of an exceptionally low tide that left the sand exposed for just 30 minutes.

Dubbed the Scramble on the Bramble' the idea was thought up by New Milton Rugby Club, which agreed to take on a side from the Portsmouth-based United Services.

The 36 players were ferried out in two landing craft from 17 Port & Maritime Regiment, Marchwood.

An Army spokesman said that the match aimed to promote mini rugby as well as to raise funds for the RNLI.

The Bramble Bank is the location of an annual cricket match between the Royal Southern Yacht Club and the Island Sailing Club.

However, this is thought to be the first time that rugby has been played on the arrowhead-shaped sandbar.
