HOUSEHOLDERS across Hampshire have again been warned to be wary of donating goods to companies who appear to be charities but are in fact profit-making firms.

Leaflets from such companies look similar to those from charities appealing to people to donate unwanted clothes to support worthy causes across the world.

However several companies who in fact sell on the clothes for profit are now operating in the region, and trading standards officers say that people should make checks before donating unwanted clothes.

Clive Robinson, team leader at Southampton City Council's trading standards department, said: "If you want to give to charity, give to a charity that you know and wish to support."
