WE are worth it. That was the defiant message today from Southampton city councillors in line to receive pay rises of up to 325 per cent.

In the face of criticism from taxpayers and union leaders, many came out fighting to back the proposals of an independent panel who came up with the hikes for those who run the city.

It comes after council service cuts, redundancies and a below inflation pay offer for other council workers.

But the man behind the recommendations insisted it was the right decision - and said the rises would only put Southampton in the mid-range for councillors' pay.

Retired university administrator John Lauwerys said he hoped higher allowances would attract more people to stand for office.
