COUNCIL chiefs have come under fire after scrapping plans to improve a gym at a loss-making sports complex in the New Forest.
Opponents of the decision say the scheme would have boosted takings at Gang Warily recreation centre and thus reduced the burden on local taxpayers.
Fawley Parish Council originally approved plans to move the gym to a bigger room and install brand new equipment, including machines for disabled users.
However, the decision was overturned after the Conservatives lost control of the authority at this year's local elections.
The new Liberal Democrat administration described the proposals put forward by centre manager Kevin Lobley as risky and over-ambitious.
However, supporters of the scheme say it would have provided vital income for Gang Warily, which made a loss last year of about £170,000.
A protest petition signed by 137 people says: "We support the manager's efforts to improve the centre, reduce the losses it's currently making and reduce the burden on local taxpayers."
