MORE than a dozen firefighters were sent to an incident in Southampton today after reports of a blaze in house that had been converted into flats.

The fire at the property in St George's Road in Freemantle was reported to Hampshire Fire and Rescue shortly after midday by the residents of the property after they noticed smoke in their living room.

In total 14 firefighters and four fire engines, including a special equipment unit, were sent to the blaze after it was feared the residents were still inside the address.

However on arrival it was discovered they had all got out at the time the emergency call was made and the crews quickly extinguished the fire and flushed the smoke from the property.

A spokesman for the fire service said significant smoke damage had been done to the flat, but fortunately the flames had been put out before they had spread outside the living room.
